Israel emerged peacefully and gradually from within canaanite society. There is no doubt that israel had arrived in canaan by the end of the thirteenth century. Hapiru: a class within the canaanite society, people who were social outcasts, banished from the city-states for economic or political reasons. Sometimes they become brigands, sometimes they hired themselves out as mercenaries. Scholars today tend to associate the birth of israel wit a new wave of settlement in the central highlands of canaan. Some settlers may have been associated with the haripu. Crucial to the patriarchal narratives (stories of abraham, issac, and jacob) is the search for a homeland.
