HSC 4201 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Prospective Cohort Study, Cohort Study, Odds Ratio
Document Summary
An epidemiological study aimed at testing hypothesis about the relationships between health problems and possible risk factors: risk factors factors that increase the probability of disease, injury or death. Front line community health workers do not conduct analytics studies. An example of an analytic study might be to discover whether cigarette smoking (possible risk factor) is associated with lung cancer (health problem) 2 types of analytic studies: they differ by the role played by the investigator. Observational studies the investigator simply observes the natural course of events, taking note of who is exposed/ unexposed and who has/has not developed the disease of interest. Experimental (interventional) studies the investigator allocates the exposure and follows the subjects for the development of disease. Cross-sectional studies individuals are simultaneously classified according to their exposure and disease status: example: a questionnaire may ask about injection drug use (exposure) and whether or not someone has been diagnosed with hiv (disease)
