To successfully teach a life skill, we must model and demonstrate it in daily life. The up-side of prescriptive sel programs is they are easily implemented and measurable in the short term. Twenty-minute lessons once a week for six weeks may yield positive results. The down side is the lessons may change children"s skills but do not enhance the social emotional. The bullying program at my school (a performance put on by my drama class in. 8th grade) was shut down because multiple complaints came in that the students performing in the play were actually bullies themselves. The play was hardly effective in its previous years considering the students watching were just scowling at the hypocrisy of their oppressors. Mostly, teachers are forced to think on short-term goals of keeping the class quiet by punishing the student acting out. Conscious discipline methods seek to aid teachers in ways of avoiding that.
