Document Summary

Gene idea: parents pass on discrete heritable units called genes. Gregor mendel: father of modern genetics (monk); first to carefully quantify particulate mechanism of inheritance through his experiments with garden peas. Character: heritable feature, such as ower color (actual feature)-flower color. Trait: variant of a character (options of the actual feature)-purple or white ower. Breeding lines that always had one or the other trait. Mendel tracked only those characters that varied in an either-or manner. Mendel also always started his experiments with varieties that were true-breeding. His experiment was that he picked plants in his pea-garden focused on one trait or the other. Mated 2 contrasting, true-breeding varieties, a process called hybridization. In f1 he let plants self pollinate and isolated them to see their results. Colors never blended (white identical to parent white & same with purple/never a lavender) Only the purple ower factor was affecting ower color in the purple f1 hybrids.
