Art after 525 ce is considered byzantine art. Christian is a term given to those for follow jesus of nazareth. Christian were executed because they refused to worship emperor or to take part in the rites of the state"s imperial cult. Executions didn"t stop until 313 when constantine wrote his edict of milan. Earliest christian churches discovered near the euphrates river in syria at a site called dura-europas. Community house built w/ small rooms (cubiculas) surrounding a courtyard. Eucharist- the ritual consumption of bread & wine. Located outside the old pomerium- sacred boundary of the city proper. Dug by men called fossores- grave diggers, tunnerlers, and guides to visiting families. Loculi- shelf like opening in the walls of the galleries. Cubicula- small rooms carved out of the rock that could contain a number of loculi. Romans didn"t need catacombs b/c they were cremated and remains placed into urns that were housed in a columbarium.
