Advertising is a communication tool that functions most efficiently in combination of two components: centralized exchange: a system of trade and marketing through specialized intermediaries rather than the direct exchange of goods between buyers and producers. Factors of rise of advertising (after civil war) Public education created a literate population; the need for magazines and newspapers rose: advertising prospered after industrial revolution. Mass production allowed for efficient manufacturing of goods. Technology for high-speed presses for printing magazines/newspapers introduction of railroad.
