Studies the effects of drugs on the mind and behavior. Used placebo effect and double-blind procedures to evaluate drug effectiveness. Two groups are unaware of which is the drug or placebo. Mimics receptors for dopamine (blocks/increase) to reduce overreaction to irrelevant stimuli. Hospitalization in mental institutions declined because of the drugs. Used in life-skills programs and to treat schizophrenia. Remove positive symptoms associated with schizophrenia: agitation, delusions, hallucinations.
