Document Summary

Professor jason lee: introduction to hypothesis testing, introduction. In the previous chapters we used interval estimation to estimate the value of a population parameter like the population mean or the population proportion. We now turn to the other side of statistical inference: statistical hypothesis testing. In hypothesis testing, a statement called a hypothesis is made about some characteristic of a particular population. A sample is then taken to establish whether or not the statement is true. If the sample produces a result that would be highly unlikely if the statement were true, we can conclude that the statement must be false. Suppose that you arrive home from the grocery store with a basket full of strawberries. The supermarket claims that no more than 5% of its strawberries have a blemish. However, when you take a random sample of 20 strawberries from the basket you find that all 20 are blemished.
