SOCIOL 2 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Cultural Globalization, Emerging Markets
Document Summary
Pop culture is only one part of culture. Consuming it doesn"t necessarily affect other cultural values or beliefs. Today"s media allows for diverse cultural flows. Contact with global culture can re-assert local culture. Given these criticisms of the homogenization thesis, many scholars argue that what we see instead is cultural hybridization. Cultural hybridization the mixing and recombining of different cultures into a new global cultural mixture. Idea that conflict is inevitable when globalization brings cultures into contact is very common. But, there are lots of critiques of this line of argument. Culture usually not the underlying cause of conflict. Cultural divisions are often the consequence rather than the cause of conflict. Differences between cultures are smaller than claimed and should not be seen as fixed. Cultural divisions are not intrinsic, but shift. Evidence indicates that cultural interaction doesn"t necessarily lead to conflict. Hollywood wasn"t always dominant in the film industry.
