SOCECOL 10 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Null Hypothesis, Random Assignment, Repeated Measures Design
Document Summary
Ch 10 (extending the logic of experimentation: within-subjects and matched-subjects approaches. Important to begin experiments with groups that can be assumed to be equal: statistical importance of reducing variation, especially the within-groups variation (random assignment to ensure no systematic differences are present. Sometimes random assignment may not be best approach. Between-subjects design: design that compares the performance of one group of participants with the performance of another group. 2 groups (group 1 - has 5 participants receiving a certain treatment) and group 2- has 5 more participants receiving another treatment. Each participant is exposed to both levels of iv. Group 1 and 2 get same treatment. It accomplishes: equating groups before the presentation of the iv and reduces error variance. Also increases the sensitivity of a study by decreasing the chance of error variance because it removes the variance that results from individual variability.
