Closed system is one in which the important factors that influence the environment are controlled by the experimenter: generalizability- external validity. Archival research: uses existing records collected before the time of the study and not for the purpose of the study, earthquake. Interrupted time series design: several pre and posttests. Retrospective designs and ex post ts that have facto designs- attempt to use empirical procedures for suggesting meaningful relationships between events that have occurred in the past. Natural observations do not tell us how one variable influences another. Reactive behavior: a participant"s behavior is influenced by the mere presence of the observer.
