Document Summary

Hume section 12: of the academical or sceptical philosophy. Even though religion has proof that god exists, they still wonder how to defeat an atheist. Descartes proposed that we doubt everything until we find something indubitable, but no principle can be classified as self-evident. When moderately taken, it does make some sense. In order to uncover the truth, we need to approach philosophy from an objective angle. Senses alone do not suffice, yet humans depend on them so much without suspicion because the objects are still there whether you are present or absent. But this previous point is countered with philosophy; even though a table itself doesn"t change, our vision of the table changes as we move farther away from it. Reasoning encourages us to step away from natural instincts and to utilize some of our senses. At this point, philosophy still hasn"t defeated the skeptics. Mind and objects do not have direct connections because of skewed perceptions.
