Our behaviors are shaped by people around us. Causal attribution: an inference about what caused a person"s behavior: why did she do that? . People attribute the same way scientists figure causes of events. We look at cause and effect: to answer why did she smile at me we consider when she smiles. Does she smile all the time when you talk in the room, does she not smile when others arrive. If the answer is eyes to both, then her smile is for you. Causal attributions: focus on external factors: mary smiled d/t situation demanded she be nice. Situational attributions: attributions that explain someone"s behavior in terms of the circumstances rather than aspects of the person: focus on person herself: mary smiled because she is friendly. Dispositional attributions: attributions that explain someone"s behavior in terms of factors internal to the person, such as traits or preferences.
