Document Summary
Stage n1 (non-rem) sleep, just falling asleep. Stage n2 (non-rem) sleep, no more conscious awareness. Stage r (rem), towards wakefulness rem sleep is an active stage of sleep during which the most vivid dreaming occurs. Three important neurotransmitters involved in sleep are serotonin, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine. Manifest content is the dream"s surface content, which contains dream symbols that disguise the dream"s true meaning. Latent content is the dream"s hidden content, its unconscious and true meaning. The cognitive theory of dreaming proposes that we can understand dreaming by applying the same cognitive concepts we use in studying the waking mind. According to activation-synthesis theory of dreaming, dreaming occurs when the cerebral cortex synthesizes neural signals generated from activity in the lower part of the brain: psychoactive drugs. Psychoactive drugs act on the nervous system to alter consciousness, modify perception, and change mood.
