How does our body react to stress: activates hpa axis & sns (and others, hpa: epinephrine (adrenaline) and cortisol (stress hormone easy to measure, sns: part of ans. Fight or flight response: short term (acute): adaptive, long term (chronic): problematic. Lower ses often have more stress more health problems. Almost every health problem is more prevalent in lower ses individuals: access to medical care, high stress environment (work, etc. ) Where you see your ses is relative to other people (perceived status) every step you go up on the ladder health increase. Quality social connections related to health: higher quality better health, less stress, less disease, longer survival. Downward social comparisons: comparing yourselves to people around you, to say that you are relatively better off than some. Perceived control: feeling of control over their disease (diet, attitude, exercise)
