Humans and all large primates live in groups, so group life must offer us some advantages in the struggle for survival. Critical for survival that we have psychological need to be with others and belong to groups. A group has been described as a collection of individuals who have relations to one another that make them interdependent to some significant degree. Noticed cyclists were faster when other cyclists were competing with one another together than when they cycle alone. Presence of others tended to facilitate human performance. Study of 40 children turning fishing reels. in trials alone, turned not as fast as with trials turning alongside others doing same activity. Social facilitation - initially a term for enhanced performance in the presence of others; now a broader term for the effect - positive or negative - of the presence of others on performance.
