Apology comes from greek word apologia which means defense speech. An account of socrates" defense speech (not an apology) Structure of the apology: defense against charges, discussion of penalty, last words. Aporetic: figure of speech in which a speaker expresses doubt or purports to be in doubt regarding a question: characteristic of historical representation of socrates who claims to have no knowledge (as seen in the apology) Elenchus- socratic mode of inquiry that consists of asking questions (a. k. a socratic method/cross examination) Protreptic- speech designed to instruct and persuade: the apology can be seen as designed to persuade people to be philosophical and to search after genuine virtue. One of the rare times socrates lectures on his beliefs (usually uses dialogue: socrates using mostly dialogue rather than lecture supports the idea that he has no knowledge of his own to put forward. Rather he identifies what his interlocutor thinks he knows and dissects and examines those claims of knowledge.
