Document Summary

Kant argues that mora rule exist and we have to adhere to them under all circumstances about the moment, not consequence. Acts are right when they are in accordance with duty. Hypothetical imperative- (commands we ought to follow) doing something for a desired consequence (we ought to do something only if we wish to achieve something) To avoid adhering to this, all we have to do is renounce wish. Kant also believes moral obligations are not conditioned, they are categorical. Categorical imperatives- are commands we ought to follow period ( respect others no matter what every rational human must accept. When contemplating about an act being morally right (ask ourselves what maxim we would be following) maxim being moral rule (rule adhering to) ask yourself if making maxim going to be universal law. Duties- positive/negative duties (applied to everyone no matter what) ex: no lying (if fails universal test, then not categorical)
