Art history 40a short notes, 10: hellenistic art and architecture. Macedonia is an area in northern greece which came to prominence in the 4th c. bc during the rule of king philip ii. After philip was assassinated in 336 bc, his son alexander became king of macedon, and then leader of the rest of greece, and soon conquered the persian. Empire; he was then known as the great. alexander led his men all the way to india, but after crossing the indus river in india and conquering the punjab, his men wanted to go home. They began the march back, but alexander died in babylon at age 33. His huge empire was divided up by his generals, who founded dynasties of their own that lasted until the spread of roman power.
