Psychoanalytic approach concentrates on cases where the cause of behavior is mysterious & hidden. He was practicing psychotherapist, & developed his ideas from the cases he saw as well as from introspection & his broad knowledge of literature, art, & culture. One of his grateful patients dubbed his technique the talking cure . Psychoanalytic theory is based on a small number of key ideas, including psychic determinism, the mind"s three - part internal structure (id, ego, & superego), psychic conflict, & mental energy. Psychoanalysis has been controversial throughout its history, although the nature of the controversy has changed with the times. Freud was one of the geniuses of the 20th century. Freud"s psychoanalytic theory posits 2 fundamental motives. Libido produces psychic energy, & the story of psychosexual development is the story of how this energy is focused in different areas over the course of 4 stages of life. A drive toward death & destruction (thanatos )
