Entertainment on tv- standard time blocks: 30 min, 1 hr, 2 hrs. Music also has formulas: standard rhythms. Character comedy: character quirks showcasing everyday craziness. Put-down comedy: characters power over others, power is exercised humorously. Romance: person is lonely from lack of relationship or bad relationship end. Pyramid: general formulas at top to bottom which is specific genres and sub-genres. Challenge by medium: different mediums to tell the story= different challenges to overcome, film formula for success. Changing public taste: tastes evolve over time, no repetition, can"t just copy and paste . Dealing with risk: can"t be standard and too close to the formula. If too far from formula, viewers will be confused: networks often share the risk. Findings from research: scholarly lit on what attracts audiences, stories are better if they have high degree of realism. Both used by audience members to understand media. General: elements that all stories should have to hold & keep attention.
