Aim of science: striving to create knowledge; to understand and explain phenomena. However, what is chosen to be researched can be influenced by values. Probabilistic patterns on general level (social regularities) ex men make more than women . Knowing things - most of what is known is a matter of agreement and belief. Other ways of knowing things: through direct experience/observation. *when experience conflicts with common knowledge, the experience will be surrendered in favor of agreement. What is agreement reality: accepting reality of things not personally experienced. (have special standards) Methodology: (subfield of epistemology) science of finding out. Social science methodology -how social scientists find out about human social life. Tradition: knowledge about the workings of the world and values guiding our participation in it. Advantages: we get to avoid having to start from the beginning in seeing regularities and developing understanding about the world.
