Document Summary

Distillation is the process by which materials are separated from one another through selective boiling. Mixtures are boiled at a temperature above the boiling point of one component of the mixture but below that of another due to differences in the strength of intermolecular forces of each chemical. In theory, raising the temperature of the mixture to such an intermediate level would purify the chemicals as one chemical is being vaporized while the other remains a liquid. 1. However, many chemicals create some vapor pressure at any temperature and pressure they are a liquid. They remain in an equilibrium state between liquid and gaseous states as cooler liquids are still partially vaporized, albeit to a far lesser extent than liquids at their boiling points even in idealized distillation systems. Ta: xue xu concentration of one of the distillates should then reduce the efficiency of distilling the selected distillate as its vapor pressure is decreased.
