1983: the fda"s dermatologic drugs advisory committee held a hearing in response to a petition by the environmental defense fund and others to ban the sale of kwell. Shampoo b/c it contained lindane (a member of the ddt family) Kwell shampoo could be prescribed for use against scabies. There was a clear danger to humans, but even so, pediatricians and dermatologists prescribed the shampoo for head lice in kids and adults. The petition showed that alternative lice and scabies treatments had been shown to be successful. Lindane penetrates the sin and has the potential for cns toxicity. The advisory committee recommended that prescription sale of the shampoo continue to be allowed, but with clear additional warning labeling. 1995: fda ruled that lindane could only be used as a second-line treatment when other treatments have not been effective. 2002: california banned the pharmaceutical use of lindane.
