The word civilization: comes from the latin word civilis meaning civic which is also the root of citizen and civil. City : is a place inhabited by more than 5,000 people. Earliest cities were discovered in mesopotamia which is now iraq. The importance of the city in that time: Specialization of labor (because of a surplus of food) Infrastructure (ex: roads, storage bins, law enforcement) Because of the stability of the food supply people could create things that were not essential to their daily lives. Some of the things that they did where: Because cities grew they needed more food which lead to technological revolutions. Very fertile soil, but there is not enough rain to sustain crops. The more modernized way of farming was established in the mediterranean and as that information spread to mesopotamia they realized that the only way to sustain the crops would be to figure out irrigation from the tigris and euphrates.
