SOC 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 17: Thomas Kuhn, Ian Hacking, Normal Science
Document Summary
Scientific discovery doesn"t happen in a straight line, rather there are periods of normal science ruptured by revolutions that shift paradigm of that science: paradigm = framework within which scientists operate. Evolution for example is an accepted paradigm in biology: normal science = science conducted within existing paradigm. If you learn new info about meiosis, you wouldn"t be overturning existing knowledge of the subject. When enough anomalies arise and challenge existing paradigm, called a paradigm shift or scientific revolution: copernicus shifting idea of earth at center of universe to the sun. Normative view of science = the way science ought to be conducted and not get affected by personal values or beliefs: not always true cause scientists study different things for different reasons which can be personal. Brought up to believe what science tells us and accept it. A lot of boundary work done work done to maintain border b/w legitimate and fake science.
