Religion = system of beliefs, traditions around sacred things, way people make sense of their world: a script for our actions, distinguish right from wrong. Sacred = things put to special use for worship of gods: mystical so gives us sense of awe and wonder. As assault to someone"s religious symbol is therefore an insult to their world and beliefs. Religion has 3 forms: theism = worship of god/gods, ethicalism = adherence to principles to lead good life (eg. buddhism, animism = belief spirits are part of the natural world. Christianity split among denominations: sets of congregations = groups of people who gather together, especially for worship, and share same faith. Secularism = general movement away from religion and to modern, science approach: in modern muslim and christian nations. Separation from church and stuff like the economy, the state and the family.
