Racism = belief that members of separate races possess different & unequal traits. Scientific racism = 19th century theories of race. Ethnocentrism = believing own culture/group is superior and viewing other cultures from own perspective. Ontological equality = philosophical and religious notion that all people created equally. Social darwinism = application of his ideas to society, survival of the fittest : some people defined by their race are better fit for survival. Eugenics = the idea that one can improve the human race by careful selection of those who mate and produce offspring: controlling population fertility could influence inheritable traits passed on between generations. Nativism = movement to protect indigenous land from dangerous effects of new immigrants. One-drop rule = belief that one drop of black blood makes a person black: evolved from laws forbidding miscegenation.
