Bipolar disorder (manic depressive illness) highs may alternate with lows, or feel both extremes at the same time. History: viewed depression as hostility or anger inwards, children lacked sufficient superego development so they were viewed as incapable of experiencing depression, masked depression children express depression differently from adults. May be shown via bedwetting, separation anxiety, aggression, or running. Depression in young people away: heightened risk of suicide and substance use make depression a significant concern. Depression and development: children express depression differently at different stages of development. Somber, tearful, excessive clinging around mothers, fears of separation, and self-destructive verbalizations. School-age: argumentative, combative, complain of feeling sick. Loss of weight, headaches, academic difficulties, suicide threats.
