Document Summary

Research methods for the behavioral sciences chapter 3. When a researcher tells a participant that they"re studying learning when in reality they"re looking at obedience to authority. Arguable trust is broken when deception is used, but deception may be necessary for natural responses and genuine reactions in observations (esp. social phenomena) Simulation studies participant fully informed about nature of research but asked to behave as they would normally. This is problematic because people tend not to do what they say. Consequences of deception they would, or vice versa: doesn"t normally produce any long-lasting psychological harm. Should remove any harmful aftereffects: post-experimental interview participant reaction to research is assessed. If deception is used, check if it is effective using a suspicion check questioning participants to see if they believed the experimental manipulation or guessed the research hypothesis. Allow time for answering participant questions, ask not to share details of study w/ others, etc: ensuring effectiveness of debriefing.
