Each cell is self contained and depends on the rest of the body"s cells to supply its needs: need energy, oxygen, water, essential nutrients. Genes provide the structural component cells need to survive. Certain nutrients are involved in activating and silencing genes. Genes affect the way the body handles nutrients. Inborn error of metabolism: requires a special diet to minimize potential to harm the body. Nutrients affect genes: certain nutrients and phytochemical in body uids in uence genes to make more or less of certain proteins. Tissues preform specialized tasks: grouped together to form whole organs. Body systems: groups of organs working together. Body uids supply the tissues with energy, oxygen, and nutrients. Body circulating uids: blood-travels within arteries veins and capillaries, lymph-travels in separate vessels. Blood plasma: travels around white and red blood cells, surrounds muscle cells. Extracellular uid: derived from blood in capillaries, permits exchange of materials, either returns to the capillaries or creates lymphs.
