Social support: the perceived comfort, caring, assistance and information that a person receives from others. Two approaches to define and measure the social support in pa context: measure the size of one"s social network, measure the amount and type of support that a person receives. Measuring social support: measure the amount and type of support that a person receives: assess how much of a particular type of support is perceived by the individual, wills & shinar, 2000. 5 main types of social support exist. Instrumental support: tangible, practical assistance that will help a person achieve exercise goals: ex: spotting weightlifter, taking father to cardiac rehab exercise class or taking care of a friends baby while she exercises. Emotional support: occurs through expression of encouragement, caring, empathy, and concern toward a person: enhances self esteem, reduces anxiety, and gives the person a sense of comfort, acceptance, and reassurance of self worth.
