Instrumental support: tangible, practical assistance that will help a person achieve exercise goals: ex: spotting weightlifter, taking father to cardiac rehab exercise class or taking care of a friends baby while she exercises. Emotional support: occurs through expression of encouragement, caring, empathy, and concern toward a person: enhances self esteem, reduces anxiety, and gives the person a sense of comfort, acceptance, and reassurance of self worth.
