Cause melting of snow and ice, which results in glaciers melting back and becoming less extensive. Leads to desertification: more drought in some areas, expansion of desert areas. Changes the distribution of plant and animal communities. Increase frequency and intensity of severe weather. Increase in sea surface temperatures (sst) and decreases in sea ice. Increasing sst increases intensity and duration of the strongest storms. Allows increase in evaporated water which increases warming in atmosphere. Warming of land and water surfaces causes increased rising of adjacent air, enabling clouds to continue to grow up. Number of strong tornadoes has not increased over time.
