COMM 107 Chapter 8: Outlining and Organizing Speeches
Document Summary
Speakers who are well organized impress listeners as more credible than speakers who are disorganized. Standard formatting: using correct symbols: roman numerals for main points, capital letters for primary subpoints, another primary subpoint, standard numbers for secondary subpoints, lowercase letters for tertiary subpoints. A purpose statement divides into a minimum of two main points, and main points divide into at least two subpoints. Coherance: requires that main points flow directly from the purpose statement. Your first attempt to outline your speech will prove to be more successful if you use complete sentences. Spatial pattern: explaining where something is, space allocation in a new building. Causal pattern: who or what is responsible. Problem-solution pattern: exploring the nature of a problem and propose a solution or possible solutions for the problem. Problem-cause-solution: expands on the problem-solution pattern and the causal pattern by exploring causes of the problem and addressing these causes in the solution.
