BSCI 105 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Receptor Tyrosine Kinase, G Protein–Coupled Receptor, Signal Transduction
Document Summary
Pathways of received signal being converted into a response: ex- yeast cells. Exchange mating factors- alpha cells sends out an alpha factor to a receptor and vice versa. Mating- binding factors cause cells to change, that lead to fusion. New a/alpha cell- the fuse together and become one: ex- bacterial cells secrete small molecules that are detected by other bacteria, which allow them to monitor local density of cells- quorum sensing. Allows them to coordinate behaviors- carry out activities. Communicate in chemical messages: direct contact, local- Cell junctions- both cells have junctions (pathways) that allow molecules to pass without crossing plasma membranes (cytoplasms connect) Communication of cells by interactions between molecules protruding from surface (can bind to one another) Messenger molecule are secreting by signaling cell. Local regulators- only influence in close vicinity: growth factors- have compounds that stimulate nearby target cells to grow and divide, can receive and respond simultaneously sometimes.
