Document Summary

Nonverbal actions and expressions affect our first impressions. Facial expressions, gestures, mannerisms, and movements are all examples of nonverbal behavior. Attributions are people"s explanations for events or actions, including other people"s behavior. Personal attributions are also known as internal or dispositional attributions. These explanations refer to things within people, such as abilities, moods, or efforts. Situational attributions are also known as external attributions. These explanations refer to outside events, such as luck, accidents, or the actions of other people. Fundamental attribution error- when explaining other people"s behavior, we tend to overemphasize the importance of personality traits and underestimate the importance of situation. Stereotypes that are initially untrue can become true. Self-fulfilling prophecy is people"s tendency to behave in ways that confirm their own or others" expectations. When they are negative, stereotypes lead to prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice involves negative feelings, opinions, and beliefs associated with a stereotype.
