The mind is physically distinct from the brain. A person cannot be conscious of too many things at once. Consciousness varies naturally throughout the day and with your sleep/wake cycle. Prognosis is much better than for those in persistent vegetative state. Brain imaging can help determine brain activity and likelihood of recovery. Can identify objects you are seeing by looking at your brain activity. Particular type of neural activity determines the particular type of awareness. The global workspace model posits that consciousness arises as a function of which brain circuits are active. Split brain- condition caused by an extreme treatment for seizures. Brain"s halves are completely separated from each other. Produces two half brains , each with its own perceptions, thoughts, and consciousness. Interpreter- the left hemisphere"s propensity to construct a world that makes sense. We are aware of some mental processes and not aware of others.
