A trend particularly apparent with boys and their fathers: peers and teachers become more influential than they were for younger children. Self-concept becomes influenced by the opinions of others, even by other children they do not know: because children think concretely during middle childhood, materialism increases, and superficial attributes become important, making self-esteem fragile. Self-conscious emotions develop during middle childhood, guiding social interaction. In general, children"s interpretation of family circumstances is crucial. Spiritual faith and religious rituals also help children cope if they provide hope and meaning. Sometimes are aunts, uncles, or cousins of the child: polygamous family- a family consisting of one man, more than one wife, and their children, family function may suffer in that structure. Income correlates with family structure: usually, married couples live apart from their parents if everyone can afford it, mate selection and income explain some of the correlation between nuclear families and child well-being, but not all of it.
