Organization of the chemistry of life into metabolic pathways. The totality of an organism"s chemical reactions is called metabolism. Emergent property of life that arises from orderly interactions between molecules. A metabolic pathway begins with a specific molecule, which is then altered in a series of defined steps, resulting in a certain product. Catabolic pathway: breaks down complex molecules to simpler compounds. Anabolic pathway: consumes energy to build complicated molecules from simpler ones. Bioenergetics- the study of how energy flows through living organisms. Kinetic energy: associated with the relative motion of objects. Thermal energy: kinetic energy associated with the random movement of atoms or molecules. Potential energy: energy that matter possesses because of its location or structure. Chemical energy: potential energy used by biologists to refer to the potential energy available for release in a chemical reaction. The study of the energy transformations that occur in a collection of matter is called thermodynamics.
