BSC 108 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Lipid Bilayer, Cell Membrane, Nuclear Membrane

49 views4 pages

Document Summary

Everything we do is possible because of processes that occur at the cellular level. Most cells are between 1 and 100 micrometers and are only visible with a microscope. All living things are composed of cells and that all cells come from earlier cells. Prokaryotic- found in organisms of domains bacteria and archaea, known as prokaryotes. Eukaryotic- found in organisms of the domain eukarya-including protists, plants, fungi, and animals. Plasma membrane- regulates the traffic of molecules between the cell and its surroundings. Cytosol- thick, jellylike fluid where cellular components are suspended. Ribosomes- build proteins according to instructions from the genes. Prokaryotics were the first on earth (3. 5 billion years ago vs. 2. 1) Prokaryotics are much smaller and are simpler in structure. Eukaryotes have organelles, membrane-enclosed structures that perform certain functions and prokaryotics do not. Nucleus- houses most of eukaryotic cell"s dna and surrounded by a double membrane. Dna is in a nucleoid in a prokaryotic cell.
