Substitute: nonverbal cues can substitute for verbal messages. Complement: nonverbal cues delivered simultaneously with verbal messages complement. Kinesics: study of human movement, gestures and posture. Emblems: a nonverbal cue that has a specific, generally understood meaning in a given culture and may substitute a word or a phrase. Illustrators: a nonverbal behavior that accompanies a verbal message and complements, contradicts or accents it.
