Most individuals with legal blindness have a great deal of useful vision and that most students who have visual impairments read print. Acuity is determined by having an individual read the letters on a chart, each line of which is composed of letters written with a certain size of print. Field vision - area around them that they can visually detect when looking straight ahead. Visual impairment and blindness to describe students who need support because of visual issues. Visual impairment - an umbrella term used to refer to anyone who qualifies for special education services under the idea category. Idea defines visual impairment (including blindness) as an impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a child"s educational performance. 1-2 out of 1,000 believed to have a visual disorder. Low vision - describes individuals who read print, although they may depend on optical aids, such as magnifying glasses. Individuals with low vision may not be legally blind.
