SOC 0851 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Subsistence Agriculture, Modernization Theory
Global Perspective
The Colonial period
o Colonialism and imperialism are the terms that best describe the
relationship between Europe and the rest of the world up until
World War II
▪ Imperialism – economic, political, or cultural domination
over nations or communities
▪ Colonialism – building and maintenance of colonies in one
region by people from another region
• Colonization had varying impacts on gender relations
among the cultures of colonized peoples, sometimes
in negative ways
• European colonizers believed they were bringing
civilization to colonized peoples and often made the
plight of women worse rather than better
The Development Project – followed the overthrow of colonial power
around the world
o Modernization theory – the postcolonial world could become
like the countries of the developed world if they followed their
lead economically, politically, and socially
o The developing world could come to enjoy the fruits of
democracy, economic prosperity, improved health, and
increased equality that characterized life in countries like those
in Western Europe and the US
o Nongovernmental organizations – work on various problems
that might sometimes be considered the role of the government
to solve – social, political, economic, or environmental problems
