Consider what split brain patients have to tell us about the self and consciousness. Koch- harbor two conscious minds in their two brain halves". Gazzaniga- consciousness had been separated to give dual consciousness, or a double conscious system. The conscious mind, the self or soul, is a spin doctor, not the commander in chief. Left hemisphere interpreter uses language, organizes beliefs, and ascribes actions and intentions to people. Ascribed to having the linguistic ability of a three year old child, or reasoning capacity of a chimpanzee. A strange dissociation of functions that are normally connected human with a split brain has been deprived of the capacity to use normally coordinated functions, not split into two people. Mereological fallacy- tendency for neurologists to say that brains or parts of brains can see, hear, know, think, make decisions, or experience things when all these abilities are functions of whole human beings not bits of a brain.
