Document Summary

Chapter 11: postural control in wellness and performance. Poor postural control- evidenced by biomechanical misalignment or poor balance may result form causes such as disease, injury, genetics, and chronic adaptations. Behavioral states are reflected in physiological stages, overt movement, and subtle changes in tone/postural control. Chronic negative behaviors- disordered muscle tone and associated postural changes. Pns and cns decline, poorly functioning physiological systems= postural dysfunction. Secondary core training- noncore movements that require extensive core stabilization. Targeting specific body segment stability is better than full body. Whole body balance training now suggested to be a component of any fitness program aimed at improving functional health. Fall prevention is necessary in older people: task specific functionality is very important. To summarize- exercises for body segment stability and balance can have positive effects on health and performance, particularly for populations with declining function. Postural control training improves trunk stability, which improves motor skill execution.
