Ability- attributes that provide the capability to produce motor skills. Can be classified by: precision of movement, stability of movement, and movement continuity. Fine motor skills- use small muscles and are precise, writing and sewing, dart throwing. Gross vs. fine and be described as a continuum. Closed skills- performed in an environment that is stable and predictable: environment wants to be acted upon by the individual, self paced- individual chooses their own pace of action. Open skills- done in an open changing and unpredictable environment: externally paced- environment influences the timing and initiation of the motor skill. Closed v. open- what dictates what the performer does. Self paced v. externally paced- what dictates when the performer does. Most skills are learned in closed environments, then applied to open ones.
