Document Summary

The digestive system is the organ system that processes food extracts nutrients from it and eliminates the residue. 1: digestion- mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into a form usable by the body, absorption- uptake of nutrients into the digest tract then into blood or lymph, compaction-absorbing water and consolidating indigestible residue into feces, defecation. The digestion stage has 2 facets mechanical and chemical. Mechanical digestion- physical breakdown of food into smaller particles. Cutting and grinding by teeth, churning contractions of stomach and small intestine. Mechanical digestion exposes more food surface to the action of digestive enzymes. Chemical digestion- series of hydrolysis reactions that break down dietary macromolecules into their monomers. Carried out by enzymes in the salivary gland, stomach, pancreas, and small intestines. Some nutrients are already present in usable form in the ingested food and are absorbed without being digested vitamins, free amino acids, minerals, cholesterol, and water.
