Document Summary

Chapter 15 notes: the ans and visceral reflexes. Motor nervous system that controls glands, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle. Primary target organs are viscera of thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities, blood vessels, sweat glands, and piloerector muscles. If autonomic nerves are severed, the muscle exhibits denervation hypersensitivity- exaggerated responses. Sympathetic division: adapts body for physical activity. Parasympathetic division: calming effect on body, resting and digesting, maintains smooth muscle tone in intestines and holds resting heart rate down (if severed, heart beats at intrinsic rate) Balance between sympathetic and parasympatheti(cid:272) to(cid:374)e shift with (cid:271)ody"s (cid:374)eeds. Signal travels across two nerve fibers to get to target organ and must cross a synapse where two neurons meet in an autonomic ganglion. Preganglionic fiber- myelinated and leads from soma in brainstem or cord to autonomic ganglion. Postganglionic fiber- unmyelinated, to target cells, synapse with a chain of varicosities that diffusely release neurotransmitter into tissue and may stimulate many cells simultaneously.
