Document Summary
The study of how people understand the causes of events. Three dimensions: (1) internal/external (2) stable/unstable (3) global/specific. The construal process people use to explain both their own and others" behavior. We try to determine what causes symptomatic of the person in question or applicable to nearly everyone . Covary with the observation or effect they"re trying to explain. Discounting principle the idea that people should assign reduced/discounted weight to a particular cause of behavior if other plausible causes might have produced it. The idea that people should assign greater/augmented weight to a particular cause of behavior if other causes are present that normally would produce a different outcome (ex: acting out of role) Thoughts counter to the facts, considerations of what might have, could have, or should have happened, if only a few minor things were done differently. An emotional reaction tends to be more intense if the event almost didn"t happen.
