Document Summary

Intermolecular forces: the attractive forces that hold particles together in the condensed phases (solids & liquids), the magnitude (size) and the strength of intermolecular forces is what determines whether the particles that. Chapter 11 makeup a substance are gas, liquid, or solid: type of intermolecular forces. Ionic bonding: very powerful because the particles that makeup it up have full charges, van der waals forces, attractive forces that act between atoms or molecules in a pure substance, hold particles together in the condensed phase. Large intermolecular forces between particles = more energy to separate particles = higher boiling point (temp). London dispersion forces: attractive forces that act between all molecules, including nonpolar molecules, resulting from the formation of instantaneous dipoles and induced dipoles. Instantaneous dipole: a fleeting nonuniform distribution of electron density in a molecule without permanent dipole, nonpolar molecules, can induce dipoles in neighboring molecules.
